Are you using language that will:
-
capture the imagination of your audience?
-
draw them in, and keep them there?
-
convey your desired message to your audience?
Let me give you an example of this to make it more tangible.
I recently worked with a client who was trying to communicate with her audience around the issue of garnering family support in making some crucial life changes for health reasons.
And initially, we were talking about language like asking for family support, encouraging family support, requesting family support – all of those words are relevant.
What we ultimately decided on is that it needed to say insisting on family support.
Because in this individual’s circumstances, the changes that needed to be made in her client’s life were crucial for her health situation.
And using the word insist was the most aligned with the message that she was really trying to convey with her audience.
When we use language that is a little bit bolder, not only do we draw our audience in more effectively, but we keep them there.
So when you’re evaluating the language that you’re using, make sure that it’s clear.
Make sure it’s understandable to your audience, and that you’re using words and terms that they can resonate with and understand very easily.
And also make sure that you’re captivating.
You’re telling a story, you’re drawing them in, you’re attracting and inviting them into your content where you hope that they will pick up something very vital and important from interacting with that content.
Whether it’s a blog or a video or social media post, choosing language that’s engaging, captivating and a little bit ballsy helps to capture their attention, AND convey your message in the clearest way possible.
